Post-Partum Care

Post-partum care is the last component of our birthing services. Unlike a typical hospital birth experience that ends when you go home, we provide continued care for both mother and baby through a home visit.  That home visit usually occurs about two days after the birth. The Registered Nurse that attended your labor and birth will assess you, your baby, and your breastfeeding relationship in your own home environment.  She will teach you about care for yourself, for your newborn, and ways to improve or sustain your breastfeeding relationship, and she will answer any questions that may come up.  She will also consult with your CNM as necessary.

As during your prenatal experience at The Birth Center, the CNM is available by phone 24/7 for important questions or concerns that arise after your birth.

Two final office visits with the CNM will be scheduled at three and six weeks after your birth.  During the 3-week visit, another baby exam will be done and your breastfeeding experience will be reviewed and any questions you have will be answered.  During the 6-week visit your mental and physical recovery from the hormonal shifts of birth and the early postpartum will be discussed,  contraception plans reviewed, and any additional questions you might have will be answered.  Your next well woman/gyn health appointment will also be discussed.
